God and One Redhead - Mary Slessor of Calabar by Carol Christian and Gladys Plummer

How long is God and One Redhead?

God and One Redhead is 184 pages long.

How easy is God and One Redhead to read?

Short chapters and simple language make this a very easy book to read. As it is written in 1970 about events from the late 19th century onwards, there a couple of instances where you may need to exercise the grace of changing times.

What will I get out of reading God and One Redhead?

God and One Redhead tells the story of Mary Slessor’s life and mission to the tribes of 19th century Nigeria where she sought to spread the word of God whilst also promoting women's rights and protecting children from all-too-common infanticide: especially of twins.

On the one hand, this biography is an inspiring example of passionate and single-minded devotion to the great commission and sacrificial compassion to all people. On the other hand, it is a cautionary tale about the dangers of zeal.

I love Mary Slessor. It feels weird to say I will miss her, but I really will. She has a fantastically unique character that is so likable. Her faith is so clearly evident in her “inexhaustible patience,” unrelenting drive, and the value she placed on all life.

For all the ways she blessed the world, Mary’s defiance and rebelliousness also serve as a warning. She worked herself to near death on multiple occasions and often found herself in tension with her own mission partners for insisting she work her way (which she often got due to her success).

Is God and One Redhead good?

This is a very good book though my general emotional state whilst reading was one of heartbreak: for her trials and the mass of tragedies in her mission work but, most of all, you get to know Mary intimately so by the end of the book I began to miss her.

If you would like an insight into 19th century Nigeria and Christian missions, whilst also finding inspiration from a one of kind Christian missionary, this is absolutely worth a read.

This is quite a hard book to find now but there are copies available here at abebooks.co.uk. The ISBN numbers are: 0340129166/978-0340129166.
